BRAKE FLUID

What is DOT?

DOT is short for Department of Transportation in the USA, which assigns safety ratings for brake fluid. DOT 3 and DOT 4 are among the modern and safest standard as of today.

Why is boiling point important in Brake Fluid?

Over time, brake fluid deteriorates in use because it absorbs moisture from the atmosphere. The excessive amount of moisture absorbed will boil the fluid at lower temperature due to heat generated during frequent braking action. This can also cause vapor lock, which affects your braking system. It also makes the fluid less reliable in hard braking efficiency and emergency conditions. Prestone® Brake Fluid prevents this from happening because of its high boiling point.

What is recommended boiling point for a safe brake system?

The recommended boiling point for a safe brake system is at 230°C. When the boiling point of your brake fluid reaches 180°C – 200°C, we recommend that you top-up to replace the contaminated brake fluid. In the event that you reach 180°C and below, we advise that you flush out the old brake fluid and fill up your system with fresh brake fluid. The recommendations mentioned are based on all brake fluid manufacturers via Federal (FMVSS-116), DOT (Department of Transport) or SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers).

What is Vapor Lock?

While brakes work, it creates friction that causes heat. The heat creates vapor and excessive moisture that will form bubbles inside the brake lines. This will create air spaces in between which your brake pedal will feel “spongy”. Hence, vapor lock is a kind of brake failure due to vapor formation. In some cases, like during hard braking, the pedal can go straight to the floor without any braking action at all.

How do you prevent vapor lock formation?

Regular car maintenance, changing of your brake fluid, and getting into Prestone® Brake Fluid “Flush & Fill” habit as opposed to merely topping up will help prevent vapor lock formation and ensure your safety every time you drive.

How often should I change my brake fluid?

If you check the owner’s manual of year 2000 and up model vehicles, you’ll find that car makers are recommending brake fluid changes every 24 to 36 months or every 40,000 kilometers drive. However, technical experts recommend to top-up regularly and change the brake fluid (flush and fill) once a year after completing the warranty period.

What is Prestone® Brake Fluid “Flush & Fill” habit?

The Prestone® Flush & Fill habit is a brake system maintenance of changing the brake fluid once a year instead of regularly topping-up with old brake fluid. It is a maintenance habit wherein you drain your old brake fluid by bleeding and replacing it with Prestone® Brake Fluid. Through this, it will help protects your brake system from corrosion and will avoid you from costly repairs.

ALL-VEHICLE COOLANT

What is the shelf life of Prestone® Coolant?

If the product is still in the original sealed container or has not been diluted with water then it has a shelf life of many years.

What is the best coolant concentration for a vehicle? Can I use 100% concentrate? Can I add more water in the coolant-water mixture?

We recommend that you use between a 50% and 70% concentration of coolant. At least 50% is necessary to give the adequate amount of rust, corrosion and boilover protection. We do not recommend more than 70% concentration since this may cause restriction of the heat transfer capabilities and corrosion protection, which is the role that the water plays in your cooling system.

Is 1 (one) bottle of Prestone® Coolant Ready-to-Use enough?

Yes, all cars or light duty trucks of any make and model can use this coolant for continuous protection against overheat and boilover, rust and corrosion. It is highly recommended for old cars too.

Can I use Prestone® Coolant Ready-to- Use on my brand-new car?

Yes, all cars or light duty trucks of any make and model can use this coolant for continuous protection against overheat and boilover, rust and corrosion. It is highly recommended for old cars too.

Why it is important to take care of my engine’s cooling system?

The cooling system controls the ideal operating temperature of your vehicle, providing the best engine performance and the least wear. If your vehicle’s radiator fails to keep your engine in the proper temperature, your vehicle will not only break down but may cause massive inconvenience. It is not safe to be on board a vehicle that is so close to its temperature limit. Thus, proper care is necessary.

Is it safe to use Prestone® Coolant with my current brand of coolant?

Yes. Prestone® All-Vehicle Coolant is safe for use on vehicle makes and models. It is even safe to mix with other coolant that has a different color.

CAR-SPECIFIC COOLANT

What is POAT?

POAT stands for Phosphate Organic Acid Technology. Prestone® Car-Specific Coolant is a prediluted, ready-to-use coolant specially formulated to be compatible with the Asian-based POAT technologies so it matches with the Asian cars built today.

What is the right coolant for my vehicle?

Always consult your owner’s manual to assure you know what type of coolant is recommended for your vehicle and read the labels before purchasing a coolant to help assure you make the right choice.

What is the prediluted mix of EG and Water in Car-Specific Coolant?

What is the Boil-over protection?

The boilover protection of Prestone® Car-Specific Coolant is 265°F / 129°C (using a 15 lb. pressure cap in good condition).

What is the Corrosion Protection? What is ASTM D3306 and ASTM D4985?

Corrosion Protection meets or exceeds ASTM D3306; ASTM D4985. ASTM D3306 is a Standard Specification for Glycol Base Engine Coolant for Automobile and Light-Duty Service ASTM D4985 is a Standard Specification for Low Silicate Ethylene Glycol Base Engine Coolant for Heavy Duty Engines Requiring a Pre-Charge of Supplemental Coolant Additive (SCA).

What do you mean by OE? Why do you say Prestone® Car-Specific Coolant is OE-compatible?

OE stands for Original Equipment. OE-compatible means this coolant is the same Phosphate-enhanced Organic Acid Technology (POAT) that protected your vehicle straight from the factory.
