Don’t just top-up. Get into the better habit.
During the rainy season, it is essential to have your brake system checked especially when your car has undergone drastic conditions such as flooded areas and the like. Since rainwater may get inside your car’s system, you may have to get your brake fluid tested. A little moisture trapped in your brake system may lead to brake failure as it will make your car less reliable in hard braking and emergency conditions.
How does it work?
Brake fluid which has absorbed excessive amounts of moisture will boil at lower temperatures due to the heat generated during the braking action. As brakes work on friction and friction causes heat, the vapor that comes out from this heat will eventually make your brakes feel “spongy.” When this happens, you will have what you call a “vapor lock—“ brake failure due to vapor formation.
Brake fluid moisture also corrodes precise metal hydraulic components such as valves and pistons which cause them to stick. Eventually, this will create rust inside your system that will clog its vital valves and ports.
What can you do?
Get into the Prestone Brake Fluid “Flush and Fill” habit once a year and thoroughly replace your old brake fluid to avoid costly repairs. Topping-up is not enough as it does not remove the unnecessary moisture trapped in your car’s brake fluid system. Be safe and have your brake system checked today!
RAINY DAYS BRAKE SYSTEM MAINTENANCE TIPS:
Be extra careful when you are caught in the middle of flood waters. Slow down and keep a good distance from the car in front of you. From time to time, press on brake pedal to check if the brake is getting weak.
Once out of the flood waters, check the brakes if it is sliding (dumudulas) due to soaking. While running the car at a low speed through short distances, step on the brake pedal gradually several times. This will help dry the friction surfaces of the drum/disc shoes and pads to restore normal braking performance. Make sure your car has a safe distance from other vehicles on your rear.
Visit a service shop and have a mechanic check your brake system if your car passed flooded streets, because water may have soaked your drums/disc brakes. If you don't, you run the risk of experiencing brake failure because the moisture from the flood waters affects brake performance.
Have your brake fluid checked once a year even in sunny weather. Any brake fluid is hygroscopic, which means it accumulates moisture over time, penetrating through the hose or master cylinder, regardless of the weather.
